V.C. Bird International Airport showed increasing air traffic for the upcoming travel season. The airport is an important access point to the eastern Caribbean region. V. C. Bird International Airport is an international airport located in Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda, 8 km (5 mi) northeast of St John’s.
The airport is preparing for a potentially busy season as authorities are doing their best to make this season as smooth as possible for the passengers. Ramp attendants and other operations personnel supported the activities conducted on Monday, including management of baggage handling, refuelling and ensuring security.
The airport management expressed gratitude for the dedicated staff, highlighting their important role in providing a smooth travel experience. They stated, “We’re incredibly proud of our ramp attendants and all the various team members who contribute to the operations here at V.C. Bird International. Their hard work ensures that passengers are safe and have an efficient and pleasant experience.“
An incident that took place in April resulted in emergency repairs at the V.C. Bird International Airport runway in Antigua. According to the reports, a portion of the airport’s runway was displaced by the exhaust from a departing flight. It was reported that the incident caused significant damage to the runway, and as a result, the airport had already been closed all that morning.
Directly after the incident, the V.C. Bird International Airport officials moved quickly to fix the runway and resume operations as usual. Airport authorities shared the news on their social media account. It said, “Flight operations at the V.C. Bird International have fully returned to normal following an incident on the Runway late Sunday afternoon where the exhaust from a departing flight displaced a portion of the runway.
The LIAT 2020 flight took off from V.C. Bird International Airport in Antigua earlier this month. It carried a few selected government officials and journalists across the water to St. Lucia.
At the launch ceremony, Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda highlighted the new service, improving the connectivity for St Kitts and Nevis to Antigua and Barbuda with a ten-minute journey.
“LIAT 2020” (Leeward Islands Air Transport Services ) emerged from the partnership between Caribbean countries and Nigerian airline Air Peace. The airline starts with a small fleet of seven planes, designed to focus on routes central to Antigua and Barbuda, St. Lucia and Barbados.
