Nevis: A new memorial has been unveiled at New River Estate to honour Melford O’Flaherty of blessed memory who was the last Estate Manager at the facility. Premier of Nevis- Mark Brantley attended the ceremony and expressed delight in recognizing their contribution.
Flaherty used to provide guided tours of the old sugar factory to students and visitors alive and outlined its significance for the history of St Kitts and Nevis. The Premier added that today was a joyous day at New River Estate when they gathered to honour Melford O’Flaherty of blessed memory who was the last Estate Manager at New River.
The initiative was organized to honour him by the government of Nevis in collaboration with his daughter Phyllis O’ Flaherty. The Ministry of Tourism also contributed to the unveiling of the memorial and stated that this is part of the rich heritage of the island nation.
Premier Brantley shared glimpses of the memorial and appreciated Melford O’ Flaherty for his contribution in telling people about the rich culture and heritage of Nevis. He applauded the efforts of her daughter to have her father memorialized in this way and extended gratitude to his late father for his achievements.
Notably, late Flaherty also worked in the agriculture sector of Nevis and supported the efforts of enhancing the local farming opportunities. He supported the production of the local crops that are grown by the local community of St Kitts and Nevis.
Premier Mark Brantley stated,” I applaud her efforts to have her father memorialized in this way and say THANK YOU to late Mr O’Flaherty for his tremendous contribution to the agricultural sector in Nevis.”
He lauded these initiatives and noted that they must continue to honour and remember those who contributed a lot to Nevis Island. Premier Brantley noted,” We must continue to honour and remember those who made a way so that we today can see.”
