In the 2024 Caribbean Premier League (CPL), the Barbados Royals outplayed the Guyana Amazon Warriors to a 32-run win at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados. Royals Quinton de Kock shone with a stunning 115 off 68 balls, scoring his first CPL century to reach a competitive total of 205/6.
Barbados Royals De Kock played an outstanding inning with eight fours and nine sixes, leading the Royals’ dominance the whole match. Jason Holder showed aggressive batting, scoring 28 off 10 deliveries. Quinton de Kock’s century against Guyana Amazon Warriors led Barbara Royals to move to the first position on the points table. Guyana Amazon Warriors have been restrained to 173/five, leading to their first defeat of the season.
Barbados Royals began well with Batsmen Kadeem Alleyne hitting six and four boundaries off Dwaine Pretorius in the opening over but later lost his wicket to him. Royals sent De Kock, who then took over and smashed consecutive fours against Keemo Paul.
Alongside Alick Athanaze, De Kock led the Royals to 49/1 in the powerplay, then moved further with boundaries against Shamar Joseph for two fours and a six in a single over. Kevin Sinclair’s remarkable 34-ball fifty lifted the Royals to 94/1 by the halfway stage.
De Kock maintained pressure on the Amazon Warriors’ bowlers despite Barbados Royals losing Athanaze’s wicket, ending their partnership. He hit two sixes off Raymon Reifer, reaching the 80s, as Powell and Miller falling quickly shook the momentum.
De Kock scored a century in 60 balls and hit two more sixes before getting out in the last over. Holder’s three sixes and a four in an over off Paul boosted the Barbara Royals. Guyana Amazon Warriors bowler Reifer ended the innings with Clarke’s wicket as the team reached an impressive score of 205/6 despite losing wickets.
The Amazon Warriors started slowly by scoring only ten runs in the first two overs before losing Azam Khan to Holder. Batsmen Tim Robinson and Shai Hope tried to gain momentum but struggled. Barbados Royals bowler Maharaj then dismissed Robinson, while Hetmyer hit two sixes, leaving the score at 46/2 after the powerplay.
Rain briefly interrupted the match after the sixth over, with the Guyana Amazon Warriors below the DLS par score.
Guyana Amazon Warriors batter Hetmyer continued his six-hitting form with McCoy. Barbara Royals bowler Maharaj then took the wicket of Hetmyer for 28 off 10 balls. By the halfway stage, the Warriors required 12 runs per over due to the Royals’ effective bowling.
Guyana Amazon Warriors duo Shai Hope and Moeen Ali attempted to boost the chase with some boundaries. Later, Guyana Amazon Warriors lost Hope’s wicket at 40 to Holder and Moeen’s wicket at 33 to Maharaj, which put pressure on the team for an impossible task ahead.
The Royals’ bowlers, with Maharaj (3/36) and Holder (2/23) leading the way, stopped the Amazon Warriors in the final five overs, securing a 32-run win as the Warriors finished at 173/5, unable to match the required pace despite early big hits.
