Grenadian sprinter and three-time Olympic medalist Kirani James secured the silver medal at the Diamond League. He completed in the Men’s 400m event. The Diamond League took place in Brussels, Belgium. The sprint was witnessed by a hug crowd at Belgium.
He made this win leaving behind the American athlete Michael Norman. He finished off the race with an impressive time record of 43.66 seconds. Norman also gave fierce competition to Kirani. The American runner finished off behind Kirani as he finished the race in a time of 43.54 seconds. The close competition was a nerve-wracking scene to watch for the spectators present on the field.
British Olympic athlete Charles Dobson claimed first place in the event. He won the Diamond League title with a time of 44.49 seconds. Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga secured third place, finishing in 44.69 seconds. The race was an intense competition in the field. Dobson’s gold was added to his list of achievements in athletics.
This win at the Diamond League comes shortly after his gold medal victory at the Grand Prix Lombardia earlier in the season. The whole nation of Grenada is proudly celebrating Kirani. The nation is still celebrating his stand-out win at the men’s 400m at the Grand Prix.
This win at the Diamond League just tops up Kiranis’s list of accomplishments. He had previously won three Olympic Medals. Additionally his other wins makes him one of most applauded athlete around the globe. His wins at the World Championship, and other notable international platforms have earned Grenada a lot of pride for sports in the international podium.
Kirani made his first win at London Olympics in the year 2012. He started winning accolades from the spectators from his first debut itself. In the final, the Grenadian sprinter made a record on the international stage. He became the first non-American to break the 44-second mark at the international platform. Also, this was added as Grenada’s first Olympic gold medal.
He later said, “It means a lot. Grenada will be going crazy right now. This is a huge step for our country in terms of stepping up to the plate in track and field, just going out there and putting us on the map.”
After winning his first Olympic medal his wins followed to establish this athletic career. Following his wins one after another his career took a brief setback for a while as he finished seventh at the 2013 World Championships. Later James made a strong comeback by setting a new personal best of 43.74 seconds in 2014.
In 2015, he took third in the World Championship final, with a time of 43.78 seconds in a historic race where three athletes broke 44 seconds. Next year at the Rio Olympics, James won silver behind South Africa’s Wayde Van Niekerk. This time he set a new world record of 43.03 seconds.
After winning his silver at the Rio, the Grenadian sprinter said, “Congratulations to Wayde. I’m happy to be part of a race that made history. We have put this sport on a pedestal. Usually guys slow down a bit in the last hundred, but not this time.”
He keeps on shining for Grenada with yet another big win at the Diamond League.
