The Grenada government has increased its support for farmers in the Northern Agricultural District as they recover from Hurricane Beryl. The Ministry of Agriculture recently provided relief aid by distributing livestock feed to farmers.
The project points out the benefits that farmers can enjoy, such as maintaining the health and productivity of their animals and providing them with nutritious feed.
Lindonna Park, Extension Assistant of the Northern Agriculture District, stated that the distribution has helped farmers who were not able to feed their livestock after Hurricane Beryl passed.
While distributing the livestock feed, many farmers came forward and expressed their gratitude for the government’s support and assistance.
During this hard time, Kelly Hall, a farmer, said this assistance helped them to feed nutritious feed to the livestock. This also helped them understand the importance of livestock feed in maintaining their animals’ health and productivity.
He added that with this distribution, the farmers will not have to mix different feed varieties to provide nutrition to the animals. Further, he said this initiative had reduced the burden on farmers’ shoulders to look for feed for the animals.
Farmers are also dealing with a lot of different challenges, like drainage, sewage systems, and the environment. The ministers said they will look into these serious concerns and seek the same. The government also approved the compensation provided to poultry farmers for housing, straps, bumper and tanks, cement, and steel.
Grenada’s Ministry of Agriculture shared the project details in September 2024. As a countermeasure to deal with the damage caused by Hurricane Beryl. The Ministry later decides to provide over EC$11 million as relief aid incentives and distribute it across Grenada nations.
The project aims to help for farmers who struggle to restore the broken 80% of Grenada’s agriculture by supporting them. The packages will also go a long way to enhance crop production in the vegetable sector and nurseries dealing in seedlings. It will also be particularly important for farmers, fishers, and beekeepers. Further, Hurricane Response incentive also includes material support.
