CARRIACOU, Grenada – The teachers and the parents of the Dover Government School have sought that temporary structure be allocated to ensure smooth conduct of the classes till a new school building is reconstructed.
The school building of Dover Government School had been destroyed in Hurricane Beryl, in July last year.
The demand was raised during a meeting of the teachers and the parents with the representatives Ministry of Education that visited Dover Government School, on Wednesday.
The team was led by Education Minister David Andrew and included Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs Tevin Andrew.
The team held discussions with the stakeholders during which the teachers parents and the school principal shared their concerns with the education minister.
The stakeholders told the minister that till the time a permanent building of the school that was destroyed in Hurricane Beryl was not constructed, they must be allowed to operate from Windward Pre-School.
Dover Government School has been operating from tents and stakeholders question the viability of operating a school without proper classrooms. They requested the minister of education to provide them with a temporary structure where classes can be held.
While interacting with the stakeholders the Minister proposed that after a new building has been erected for the Dover Government School, it must be converted into and Centre Of Excellence for the students, where besides attending the regular classes the students will be able to receive skill training.
The stakeholders agreed to the proposal put forth by the minister of education, but emphasized that the school must continue focusing on providing quality education to the students.
Minister Andrew said that the government was committed to rebuild the school but there were several challenges that had to be met before the actual work started at the site.
In response to this, the stakeholders requested the Minister to ensure that a temporary structure was provided to the teachers and the students so that the continuity of education was not impacted.
The stakeholders expressed hope that with the proactive approach adopted by the Ministry of Education, a solution will soon be found for the problems being faced by the students and the teachers in imparting education.
Minister Andrew assured the teachers, parents and the school principal that he will be putting up a strong case for rebuilding the school building and work on the same is expected to commence soon.
