In July 2024, Grenada Electricity Services Limited (GRENLEC) collected a huge insurance payout of almost US$9,323,275 (EC $25.1 million). Earlier this month, on 19th September 2024, The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) had witnessed a major achievement in the area of renewable energy and space. The project has given license to eight Small-Scale Independent Power Producers.
The project was first launched in 2021 to promote Grenada’s investment in renewable energy and not make the nation dependent on fossil fuels. This is a fundamental transformation for Grenada in the area of energy and further the cause of sustainable development.
Andrew Millet, PURC’s Chief Executive Officer, also mentioned that this program is very important, as it took quite a long time to build a regulatory framework for a successful introduction.
Mr. Clive Hosten, the General Manager (Ag.), expressed his excitement towards this project and stated that even though the GRENLEC has been involved in the usage of renewable energy since 2007, this program created a new level of development.
