Trinidad and Tobago: The Trinidad and Tobago Police Services shot a 22-year old labourer during a pre-dawn operation conducted by the officers of the NSOU (National Special Operations Unit) along with the members of the Defence Force Special Forces Unit.
The 22-year-old man who was shot during the operation was a labourer who was a resident of Chin Chin road, Las Lomas No. 1, he was shot in the upper thigh by the officers of the NSOU.
As per the reports, around 4:45am, a joint team of both the teams working on the operation executed a search warrant at the suspect’s home under section 12 of the Emergency Powers Regulations, which is taken when the situation is related to illegal firearms and ammunition.
The officers in their statements said that as they entered the house and announced their presence, the suspect reportedly became hostile and attempted to wrestle and take a firearm away from the soldiers. A struggle built up between them, during which the magazine of the soldier’s primary weapon was dislodged and the officer sustained injuries.
Watching all this and fearing for the life of his teammate another soldier discharged a single round from his weapon, striking the suspect in the upper thigh.
Upon a subsequent search of the suspects room it led to the recovery of one black Luger revolver. Both the injured soldier and the suspect were taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility for treatment.
Investigations are still ongoing on this matter by the respective authorities.
