Basseterre, St. Kitts: The government of St. Kitts and Nevis, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sport and the Creative Economy, has announced a national recognition for remarkable cricket player Mikyle Louis, set to become St. Kitts’ first cricketer to play Test Cricket matches for the West Indies teams.
St. Kitts cricketer Mikyle Louis continues to receive appreciation from the highest levels on his recent selection in the West Indies Men’s Senior Cricket Team. He has become the first Kittitian to do so.
On Monday afternoon, Louis was invited for the meeting of the Federal Cabinet where the Ministers of Government and invited ambassadors commended him on his achievement, and pledged the government’s support to his continued growth and development as a national cricketer.
Earlier, Minister of Sports Samal Duggins celebrated the sporting achievements of Mikyle Louis, the exceptional right-handed batsman.
Celebrating his achievement, Minister Duggins presented Louis with a grant of EC$10,000 to support his preparations for the upcoming series. Further, Minister Duggins commended Louis on all his historic sports achievements to date, which have made him an ambassador for St. Kitts and Nevis.
Additionally, with the Federal Cabinet’s support, the Ministry of Sport and the Creative Economy has planned to honour the remarkable player by, naming the South Stands at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium in his honour; allocating a parcel of land to him; and naming a road in his honour.
At 23, Louis is the first cricketer from St. Kitts to be named in the West Indies’ 15-member squad for their upcoming England tour. The three-match test series against England is scheduled for July 2024.
The national recognition is well deserved after his outstanding performance during the 2024 West Indies Championship. Louis is named as the highest scorer by scoring 682 runs from 14 innings in seven matches. During the tournament his average score was 48.71, which included three impressive centuries in one match at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium.
Also, Mikyle is one among three players to score four or more than four half-centuries during the tournament played. This highlights his consistent performance and the skill he possesses. During the test series against England, he is expected to form a new opening partnership with test Captain Kraigg Brathwaite for the upcoming matches.
The government has shared that the official recognition will be held subsequently.
Minister Denzil Douglas and the citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis have also joined in to congratulate Louis on his accomplishments and best wishes for the upcoming series.
