St Kitts and Nevis: St Kitts and Nevis commissioned “Prosperity” vessel on Wednesday, aiming to enhance marine safety.
The brief commissioning ceremony was hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources and lauded the government for the significant support.
The vessel was acquired from Japan under the Grant Aid for Economic and Social Development Programme. The vessel also developed a friendly ties between the two nations.
During the ceremony, Minister of Agriculture- Samal Duggins addressed the guests and expressed pleasure for the initiative. He shed light on the ways of conserving the ocean’s coastline and stated that there is need of many more such initiatives so that the small island nations could be protected.
Further, Director of the Marine Department Randel Thompson also addressed the gathering and explained the proper steps of the usage of the vessel.
He said that the vessel will be utilized for many ways as it will enhance the accurate practices of fishing.
It will serve as the infrastructure in ensuring compliance of the country with fisheries laws and bolster marine safety through patrols.
The vessels will also facilitate swift responses in search and rescue operations. In addition to that, the vessel will also be used to enhance the national security against the threats such as human trafficking, drug trafficking, and illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing within our waters.
The appreciation and gratitude were also extended to several partnering agencies during the event. The vessel will be used for the inspections, joint patrols and other purposes for showcasing collective efforts in enhancing ocean life.
Notably, St Kitts and Nevis pledge to become the first sustainable island state and several initiatives have been taken place to fulfill the agenda. The aim behind the mission is to protect the survival of the small island states and the natural resources against climate change and carbon footprints.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew asserted for climate action against the situation and stated that sustainability is needed.
