Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit extended his warm wishes to the educators and teachers on the occasion of Teacher Appreciation Day 2024. He recognized the impact that teachers have on society and encouraged their roles in contributing to the welfare of students in the future.
The week-long celebrations began with the first event, the church sessions held from September 28 to 29th, 2024. The event makes the nation recognize the hard work and dedication of teachers at various levels of education. The theme for this event was “Valuing Teacher Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education.
On September 30th, the next day a radio session was scheduled, which was addressed by the Dominica Association of Teachers (DAT) President Mervin Alexander.
World Teacher Day in Dominica is always celebrated in the first week of October. He addressed the important matters concerning the general welfare of educators in Dominica. During the Radio session, he also encouraged the children to express their gratitude to the teacher and educators.
He stated that World Teacher Day is not a public holiday. The day celebrates and acknowledges the invaluable contribution of Teacher and their role in teaching the generation. Pointing out he said it is also an occasion to remind us of the importance of quality education and the role of teachers in achieving it.
On Tuesday, October 1, Mr. Alexander, accompanied by the Public Relations Officer of DAT, was invited as one of the special guests to the Talking Point program on DBS Radio.
The following day, a social media hype day was organized by the teachers where students, parents, and well-wishers made TikToks and Facebook posts, WhatsApp messages, poems, write ups all about the teachers.
On October 4, all the teachers will come together and plan to ‘Stage a World Teachers Caravan in Dublanc.’ The event will pay tribute to the retired teachers who will be present. Apart from the rally, a sports meet will also be arranged followed by other entertainment and socialization activities.
The week will be rounded off by a message by the President of Dominica, Syvanie Burton, that will be aired on radio and television. At this event, she will talk about “World Teachers’ Day”. The radio session will be on Saturday, October 5, 2024.
On his social media account, PM Skerrit posted a message and expressed his gratitude for the role teachers play in nurturing the children.
