Dominica’s official opening ceremony for the 46th Independence Day took place on Friday, September 27th, at 10 am. This year’s theme for Independence Day is Peyti Nao, Kado Nau (Our Country, Our Gift), reflecting the nation’s focus on unity and solidarity.
Greta Roberts, Minister of Sports, Youth, Culture and Community Development, was the first speaker at the event. She started by stating, “This year, we are reminded of our duties as citizens to safeguard and nurture these gifts to ourselves and future generations.”
She also encouraged to the citizens to come forward and join together in this spirit of solidarity on Independence Day. She encouraged the nation to reach out to one another with love, support, and compassion.
During the ceremony, she also pointed out the building of bridges within the community and ensuring that people should cherish the country’s gift. Future generations can enjoy it with superior facilities to those they discovered.
She stated no matter what background or political ideas with belong, the people of Dominica should remember that strongest as reunited. Underscoring the beauty of this beautiful land and diversity of culture, the importance of unity among the citizens of Dominica.
She expressed her thanks to the people of Dominica for their support of the nation’s development. She stated, “Whether preserving our nation, driving economic growth, or nurturing the next generation through education and innovation, you all play an important role in Dominica’s development.”
In her address, she extended her thanks to Earseln Mathew, Chairman of the Independence Committee, and other ministries for keeping Dominica’s rich culture alive.
She also mentioned some long-awaited Independence Day events, like the Street parade, flag-raising ceremony, and World Creole Music Festival. All these celebrations perfectly capture the love and pride that Dominicans feel for their country.
Continuing the ceremony, Earseln Mathew, Chairman of the Independence Committee, talked about the National Miss Wob Dwiyet Pageant. The event this year, the committee selected seven young women for the event, and whoever wins the pageant will be awarded an Online Bachelor scholarship program to support the winner in continuing her education.
Dr Irving Mcintyre, Minister of Finance, Economic Development, Climate Resilience, and Social Security, expressed his gratitude to all the Ministers, citizens, and community on behalf of PM Roosevelt Skirrit.
He stated,” As passed on from generations and trusted to our nature and protection, Dominica is our valuable gift and heritage. And take this moment to wish all the Dominicans a 46th anniversary of independence. We have encountered numerous challenges, but we have remained resilient, protected and preserved, and elevated the gift of our homeland where all can live with harmony and dignity with nature .”
