Connectivity boost in the Eastern Caribbean as three new regions get added to the LIAT 2020 network.
LIAT 2020 has officially begun operations in the Dominica region, introducing direct service flights from Antigua and Barbuda, and launching a new route. The inaugural flight marked the official launch of these new routes.
The airline, which initially launched on August 6, 2024, had already connected the routes between Antigua, St Lucia, and Barbados. The expansion to the three new regions of Dominica, St Kitts, and Grenada comes weeks after the launch.
The addition of these three new routes is going to make a huge impact on the tourism industry. It is expected that the overall impact will not just improve tourism but will also make a significant positive impact on regional connections. Businesses are expected to grow and expand widely on the island.
The Discover Dominica Authority’s Chief Executive Officer, Marva Williams, echoed this sentiment in her address, emphasising the island’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. Williams highlighted the importance of sustainable development and the role of connectivity in promoting Dominica as a top travel destination. She also expressed optimism that new routes, such as those introduced by LIAT 2020, will contribute significantly to driving tourism and economic growth across the region.
Similarly, Benoit Bardouille, the Chief Executive Officer of Dominica’s Air and Seaport Authority, underscored the relevance of this development in the broader context of Dominica’s strategy to improve air travel access. He pointed out that the country is advancing plans for a new international airport, expected to be completed by 2027, which aims to increase the influx of visitors eager to explore the Caribbean’s scenic offerings.
The expanded network is set to offer more options to make the passenger’s flight experience smoother and better. The improvements are expected to happen for both leisure and business tours and travel. These will potentially stimulate and make the economic activities in the region grow at a significant rate making prominent connections across the Eastern region of the Caribbeans.
The LIAT 2020 ranks as the most investment done in a company by the government of Antigua and Barbuda. The airline was revamped and relaunched after the closure of LIAT 1974 as the airline failed to get business due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The first direct route flight made its takeoff at the VC Bird International Airport. The flight took off in the presence of Saint Lucia. Antigua and Barbuda government representatives, including Prime Minister Gaston Browne, attended the airline’s launch ceremony. PM Browne made a statement saying that the company is not just an economic aspect of the region but also symbolizes regional unity. LIAT 2020 is also set to expand its service to several other Caribbean nations as it aims to enhance its footprints in the North American market.
The airline also made it public, stating its flight itinerary from Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, and Saint Lucia. They have made the return services operational which operates from Antigua to Saint Lucia and then from Saint Lucia to Barbados. The aircraft, including 301 and 302, are being operated for this direct flight service on the route depending upon the times of arrival and departure.
