Grenada raises their victory flag in Budapest with twin victories in the chess olympiad conducted in Budapest. Team Grenada secures its double victory in both men’s and women’s teams. The Men’s team defeated the U.S Virgin Islands (USVI) by a score of 3.5-5.
All three boys of the Men’s team, Renniel Gilbert, Gennard Roberts, and Vladimir Mendez, defeated their opponents successfully, whereas Javon James had a draw with his opponent.
The women’s team also made their mark successful by defeating Sierra Leone by a score of 3-1. Achazia Lewis, Rockisha Flanders, and Tauriel Frank were successful in defeating their opponents, whereas Naziyah James lost to her opponent. Overall, both the matches were quite interesting.
Renniel Gilbert has been the most successful player in the Olympiad so far. Out of 8 games played by him, he has won 5 games, lost two matches, and drew 1 match. The 17-year-old had outshined in the tournament by making his country proud. Currently, all the women players of the Grenada team have won at least 1 match each.
Renniel Gilbert was the first player to have an upper hand in the match. He defeated a Cameroon player by a point of 1. Since then, the men’s team has performed exceptionally well in the tournament, as well as the women’s team.
Naziyah James won against her Seychelles opponent on 18 September 2024. Grenadians are celebrating their hearts out after this victory. The Ministry of Youth and Sports posted about the victory of Grenada in the Budapest Olympiad on their official Facebook page. They congratulated all the winners for their outstanding performance.

Budapest has been conducting this 45th Chess Olympiad since 10 September 2024 and will continue it till 23 September 2024. A total of 193 teams have been participating in this tournament in the open category. Meanwhile, 181 women’s teams made their appearance in the game.
After 98 years, Budapest has had the opportunity to conduct this Olympiad. Earlier in the year 1926, Budapest conducted an unofficial chess olympiad amongst various teams. All the teams participated with enthusiasm and focus in the tournament.
Budapest will be conducting its further matches in the coming days. The closing ceremony, along with the final matches, will be conducted on 23 September 2024.
