The final flight, J8-VBK SVG aircraft, reaches Codrington Airport, where it receives a Water Salute as the Airport closes permanently in Barbuda. This closure marks the end of an era and operations in the existing Codrington Airport as it gets replaced by the new Barbuda International Airport.
This crucial project of Barbuda International Airport, which will now be called The Burton-Nibbs International Airport, has an estimated value of $55 Million. Its development has been the most important project in the history of Antigua and Barbuda. This will be the country’s second international Airport, joining the VC Bird International Airport in St. John’s.
The project has involved some major upgrades, including the construction of a 7,100-foot runway. The government has invested over $14 million in the Airport’s development, which also consists of ongoing training programs for fire service personnel, airport staff, and other important staff members.
The Airport is named after Burton and Nibbs, who were important citizens in Antigua & Barbuda’s political history. They served as Members of Parliament representing Barbuda and played an important role in shaping the country’s constitution during the Lancaster House conference in 1980.
A Facebook handle shared this important update with internet users. Netizens have shown their support for this great achievement of Antigua and Barbuda and have extended their congratulatory comments to the Aviation team.
Operation Manager at Antigua and Barbuda Airport was present at the historic occasion. He conveyed his feelings by saying, “It was a joyous emotion working on this project. Though it marked an end to an era, we are excited to welcome a new era with open arms.” He explained the historical moment of the J8-VBK SVG Aircraft landing as the ‘end of an era.’
This Commercial Airport will begin its functioning this week and will allow several flights from across the world to join in. The new Airport will have various important and exciting upgrades, including a longer runway and improved facilities. The project will improve the travel experience and boost tourism in Barbuda. It will serve as an important change in the country.
This major change is important to make a greater effort to modernize the island’s infrastructure following the recent damage caused by the hurricane that affected a large population as well as the Airport’s operations. It will focus on updating the island’s image with some positive changes.
Citizens of Antigua and Barbuda are looking forward to welcoming this much-awaited project and being a part of it. Several remarks made by citizens have shown the excitement of the people for this new International Airport.
