The new international airport in Barbuda will open on October 3, 2024, getting a clear heads up from The Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA).
The Barbuda International Airport allows Direct International flights, making it easier for tourists to travel to Barbuda. It will not only help the tourists enjoy the region’s rich and diverse heritage but will also help boost the economy. Before, people had to take boats or small charter planes, keeping tourist numbers low.
The new airports give the local hotels, restaurants, and tour companies more chances to do business. With the increase in visitors, this small business becomes a tourist attraction and creates new jobs for the youth.
The new international airport will also connect to wider Caribbean regions, supporting people who want to travel and connect with areas easily. It will provide access to medical services, education, and employment opportunities and bring mobility to the people of Barbuda. The island’s remote location has historically presented difficulties during natural disasters or medical emergencies so this improved connectivity will be a lifeline.
The country’s record tourism numbers create a strong demand for new routes from international lines to the destination. The airport has come at a perfect time and is expected to meet the requirements of those planning to stay in this region for a short stay.
It opens the door for international airlines to bring new routes to Barbuda, adding connectivity from across the region with various places in the Caribbean and other parts of the world. The airlift sector in Antigua and Barbuda is growing as many airlines expand services. American Airlines will increase flights in winter starting December 5, 2024, with daily service from Charlotte, NC, to VC Bird International Airport.
JetBlue will increase its service to daily in the summer of 2024 and operate flights from Atlanta twice weekly in the winter of 2024. The Miami route will see expanded service with two daily flights running both summer and winter.
Additionally, the opening of the Barbuda International Airport is likely to attract investors and developers, facilitating infrastructure improvements. The increased flow of goods and services will support local industries such as fishing and agriculture by making the export routes easily accessible. It will be a revolutionary advancement for Barbuda’s trade sector.
Getting clearance earlier this month follows the completion of essential regulatory procedures, ensuring the airport meets international safety and operational standards. Notably, the government has initiated discussions on the potential developments at the old airport site, which will significantly boost Barbuda’s global tourist destination within the Caribbean.
