Barbados: Barbados men’s cricket team won the Rising Stars Under-19 Championship on Sunday and become champions for 2024. The team defeated defending champions Jamaica in the final match which was held at Arnos Vale Playing Field in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
In the first inning, Barbados batted first and scored 200 runs with nine wickets down. With the scoring, the team declared their inning and presented the batting time to Jamiaca. The star performer of the inning remained Raneico Smith who scored 50 runs, while Nathan Sealy made 29 runs and Zion Brathwaite scored 19 runs.
As part of the bowling, Jamaica’s Tamarie Redwood took three wickets for 61 runs and resumed their day on 72 on two wickets down at St Vincent and the Grenadines. While increasing its inning, the team made 127 runs for 8 wickets down and declared the match.
In the high scorers, Steve Wedderburn scored 39 runs and Mathew Morgan made 33 runs, giving good start to Jamaica. From Barbados, Saurav Worrel took three wickets for 24 runs, Jatario Prescod took three wickets for 51 runs.
After that, Barbados again came to the crease for batting and securing the given target as Jamaica lose the lead in the first inning. With the opening batsman- Joshuan Morris, Barbados started the day with good inning of 62 runs as he hit three fours and two sixes.
Secondly, Kyle Jordon of Barbados scored half-century of the tournament and made 52 runs in 95 balls with six fours. Their opening partnership provided 96 runs to the teams that were considered match winning runs for Bajan Boys.
On the third and fourth order, Joshua Dorne and Zion Brathwaite have played unbeaten knocks and made the team win the championships. The former played an inning of 29 runs, while the latter played an inning of 22 runs.
With the batting partnerships, Barbados became able to secure the title of the Rising Stars U-19 Championships by defeating defending championships.
Captain of Barbados Nathan Sealy expressed happiness with his team’s winning performance against Jamaica and added, ”We wanted to win and the team really worked hard. I mean we started on the back foot, we stuck together, but we fight really hard as players have carried the team through the tournament.”
Notably, Barbados will now play for the 50 over tournament which will begin on Tuesday this week.
Last year, Jamaica won both the titles and became the champions, while the title of the U17 Rising Stars two-day tournament was won by Barbados’s Bajan Boys.
