Caribbean: Barbados Royals won the first match of the “Women’s Caribbean Premier League” with the crucial knock of Hayley Mathews. The team defeated Guyana Amazon Warriors by one wicket and get a perfect start to their CPL journey.
In the starting, the toss was won by Barbados Royals and chose to field first at the Brian Lara Cricket Ground, Trinidad and Tobago. With their bowling, the team restricted the Guyana Amazon Warriors at 118 with the 9 wickets down in the 20 over match.
The seam and spin bowlers of the Barbados Royals have taken the wickets of the Warriors and made tough for them to bat on the pitch. Aaliyah Alleyne from the team took three wickets by giving 21 runs as she spelled four overs. She took the crucial wicket of well-set Stafanie Taylor who played an inning of 32 runs.
After the turn of Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon Warriors also showcased some skills and fought to defend their total. It was not comfortable for the Royals to chase the target as they found themselves in a tough spot after they were 3 down at 44 runs and sometime later, they stood at 50 runs with 4 wickets.
However, Mathews turned out to be gamechanger for Royals as she maintained the momentum and got herself set on the field. She tried not to lose her wicket and scored the run on the rough pitch.
She played an unbeaten knock of 61 runs out of 58 deliveries and batted through the innings in the match. She helped her team to secure the victory for her side and maintained their winning streak of 2023.
The team started their WCPL journey with a win as they maintained their momentum in both batting and bowling. After 10 overs, Warriors stood at 59 runs and lost their regular wickets, which duly served to Royals during chasing. The WCPL will run through August 30, 2024 and Barbados Royals remained the defending champions.
