West Indies arrives in Sri Lanka to play a limited-overs series with them starting on 13 October 2024.
West Indies will have their limited overs series against Sri Lanka, starting on 13 October 2024, which will be held in Sri Lanka. Both teams will clash with each other in three T20s and three ODIs, respectively. Rovman Powell will be the captain of the T20 squad, whereas Shai Hope will lead the ODI squad in the series. The first match of the T20 will be held at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, followed by two more matches on 15 and 17 October 2024.
Both teams will face each other further in the three One Day Internationals (ODI) on 20, 23 and 26 October 2024. This series will provide an opportunity for Cricket West Indies to focus on building its ODI team ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027. Several senior players, including Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Akeal Hosein and Shimron Hetmyer, have opted out of the tour for personal reasons. Many old players will return to the game, and various new faces will be expected in the series.
The T20 squad of West Indies will consist of players such as Rovman Powell (Captain), Roston Chase (Vice-Captain), Fabian Allen, Alick Athanaze, Andre Fletcher, Terrance Hinds, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Gudakesh Motie, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, and Shamar Springer.
The ODI squad will be led by Shai Hope and will have Alzarri Joseph (Vice-Captain), Jewel Andrew, Alick Athanaze, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Gudakesh Motie, Sherfane Rutherford, Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd, and Hayden Walsh Jr. Some of the players will be facing the Sri Lankan team for the first time.
After an outstanding 3-0 series sweep against South Africa earlier this year, the West Indies have climbed the rankings on the world stage. They have moved to fourth place and have become serious contenders for competition against various teams. The confidence and team spirit in all the players will benefit them in the upcoming matches.
All the T20 matches will be held at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, whereas all the ODI matches will be conducted at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
The Head Coach of the West Indies made a crucial statement about the upcoming series between the West Indies and Sri Lanka. He said, “The tour of Sri Lanka gives us a chance to test our depth and assess players in different situations, especially with several senior players missing out for various reasons, including a need for rest and rehabilitation from injury. We are confident in the squad’s ability to compete strongly against Sri Lanka.”
