Barbados: Victor Ashby of Dolphin’s Swim Club will be the lone representative for Barbados at the upcoming Pan Am Age Group Swimming Championships scheduled for August 22-25 in Puerto Rico.
Ashby who will compete in the 13-14 age group races would be accompanied by his coach Harold Lewis of Dolphin’s Swim Club.
Ashby who is no stranger to tough competition was first called up to represent Barbados at the 2022 CARIFTA Swimming Championships and he secured two silver medals in the boys’ 11-12 100m butterfly and in the 200m butterfly races. That year he also got his first chance to compete at CCCAN (Central American & Caribbean Championships), which were held in Barbados and before a home crowd, he captured the silver medal in the 50m butterfly in the boys’ 11-12 age group and his team in the boys’ 11-12 4x100m Freestyle relay won bronze medal.
Ashby continued to participate in these regional games and in June he won the silver medal in the 13-14 boys 100m butterfly in 59.25 seconds on the final day of the CCCAN Games in Mexico.
Locally, Ashby is a fierce competitor in the national long course and short course swimming championships, as well as the Aquatic Centre Invitational and Dolphin Swim Club Invitational competition.
A student at Harrison College, Ashby is a valuable member of the school’s swim team at the secondary schools inter-schools swimming championships.
Barbados Ninja Throwdown is a local sports entertainment competition that features some obstacles that are seen on the show, “American Ninja Warrior”, with a local twist to them. It encompasses individuals from different disciplines to complete the course in the fastest time possible.
It showcases a person’s strength and technical abilities to be agile and quick thinking while going through the course. In order to achieve victory a person must complete the entire course in the fastest time possible.
The two day event on the August 23rd and 24th, promises to be amazing and it has attracted international and local competitors from as young as 6 years old.
August 23rd features Kids, Mature Kids, Masters, and Preteens, while August 24th spotlights Teens, Young Adults, Adults, and Elite divisions. The event takes places at featherbed Lane in St. John.
The first event that took place in November 2016 had 1,500 people in attendance and out of the 60 contestants was a mixture of males and females. The winner was Malte Jorgensen, an exchange student from The University of the West Indies.
