Trinidad and Tobago: Residents in the Twin Island nation are advised to stay alert and take precautions as the weather conditions are expected to worsen. The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has issued a Yellow Level Adverse Weather Alert at 4:15 pm on Sunday. This warning went into effect at 2 p.m. on June 22 and is expected to last until 2 p.m. on June 23 which is in response to an approaching tropical wave.
Risk of showers, thunderstorms, and flash floods
According to TTMS, there is a 70% chance of heavy isolated showers and thunderstorms, which will particularly take place in the east of Trinidad and in most parts of Tobago. Also, these conditions are expected to be accompanied by strong gusts of winds, heavy rainfall which in turn can cause flash floods, temporary road blockages, localized ponding, and even landslides in hilly or unstable areas.
People living in flood-prone zones are advised by the authorities to avoid flooded roads and to stay indoors. Moreover, they are also asked to secure outdoor objects in case of strong winds which may move them or cause weak trees to fall.
TTMS advises public to stay informed and prepared
The public is encouraged to stay alert and listen for updates from the TTMS and other official government sources while staying clear of rumors which might cause chaos and panic among the locals.
Trinidad and Tobago does see many tropical waves but each one of them is a variable which is at large unforeseeable. This makes preparedness very important, especially for those in vulnerable communities.
Entering the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June to November, it is important for citizens to stay informed and prepared. Early planning and keeping up with local weather updates can help decrease the risks and impacts of such weather events.
