Trinidad and Tobago again experiences flooding after torrential rains

Trinidad and Tobago: Flooding has once again been reported in parts of Trinidad including Santa Cruz, Queens Park Savannah and St James following torrential rainfall in the twin island nation. The situation has brought traffic to a standstill, making it difficult for commuters to drive.

The several images of the flooded streets show water filled on several roads, making it almost impossible for two wheelers to drive.

The Trinidad and Tobago weather center has noted that flooding in the island nation has become the most frequent natural disaster as the country remains highly vulnerable to several types of flooding as soon as it rains.

Throughout Wednesday, the island experienced heavy rainfall with high winds, causing streets to be completely filled with rainwater. As of 3:10 pm, flash flooding continued at Saddle Road, Santa Cruz, in the vicinity of San Juan North Secondary School. The roadway still remains impassable as the upper San Juan River overtops.

Not only this, but at the same time, a waterspout touched down in the Gulf of Paria just off Mosquito Creek and is currently ongoing. This thunderstorm was fairly stationary and looked like a tornado just west of San Fernando.

The conditions gradually settled by the late afternoon into the evening with the Meteorological Office reporting that the activity is due to strong daytime heating which was coupled with sea breeze convergence, after the passage of a tropical wave overnight – particularly for the wet season.

Weather Outlook for Trinidad and Tobago from August 1 to August 5

According to reports from the Meteorological Office, a tropicl wave is, at present, moving across the Leeward Islands and parts of the northern Windward Islands, generating showers over a broad area and a few heavy showers along with thunderstorms in other areas.

 Thursday, August 1

The weather will remain mostly fair throughout the day and after some morning heating, the initially sunny conditions over Trinidad and Tobago are likely to be interrupted from late morning to afternoon, by partly cloudy conditions producing a few showers, bringing medium chance for an isolated heavy shower or thunderstorm.

 Friday, August 2

According to the reports, from late morning, there will be partly cloudy conditions which are likely to be experienced across Trinidad and Tobago, with a medium chance for the development of isolated heavy showers or a thunderstorm.

 Saturday, August 3

The Met Office reported that partly cloudy periods with showers in a few areas, are likely to interrupt some sunshine over Trinidad and Tobago. It is reported that there is a medium chance for isolated heavy showers along with thunderstorm to develop during the late morning or afternoon.

Sunday, August 4

Trinidad and Tobago is likely to experience cloudy situation with light to moderate showers as well as rain. There will also be medium to high chance for heavy showers and thunderstorms.

Monday, August 5

There will be light to moderate showers which will interrupt some relatively fair periods over several areas in the country. Also, there is a medium chance for an isolated heavy shower or thunderstorm, mainly during the early morning to mid-afternoon.
