St. Kitts and Nevis: To address the crime and violence the government of the island nation is planning a National Consultation on Citizen Security. The National Consultation is a key component of a 90-day comprehensive campaign titled “90 Days of Intensity, a Whole Society Responsibility.”
The campaign’s main objective is to look after the crime and violence cases from a public health perspective through a collaborative, community-driven approach that involves various stakeholders, promotes prevention, and fosters resilience.
Further the aim is to engage the residents in developing comprehensive strategies and solutions for citizen security. The consultation will involve several experts, policymakers and leaders of the community.
The topics that will be discussed include youth violence, domestic violence, community policing, and the criminal justice system. The major development of this initiative will be the National Action Plan for Citizen Security.
On this matter, the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Terrance Drew stated that the before initiating anything new, several discussions were held to ensure that the National Consultation is inclusive and data driven.
He further added that is government’s first responsibility to provide the residents with the surroundings and environment that is safe and secure. So, to follow that the government must take the lead in addressing threats to our national security and ensuring safe communities.
Dr. Drew stated that the National Consultation is a major initiative under the Government’s agenda for creating St. Kitts and Nevis as a sustainable Island State. Additionally, the key pillar of that agenda is social protection.
“The National Consultation and, by extension, the 90-Day Campaign will help us to achieve that goal,” Dr. Drew added.
It is to be noted that the National Consultation on Citizen Security will be held on 22nd August 2024.
Significantly, the planned activities for the 90-Day Campaign include town hall meetings, engaging with the community programmes, career fairs, and educational workshops.
