The officials of the Sint Maarten Police Force received a complaint reporting multiple injuries that were caused by a lightning strike on the Philipsburg Boardwalk. The incident was reported around 1:15 PM today.
The police and local ambulance services, on arrival, discovered that five people were injured after the lightning struck them. The ongoing severe weather conditions are the reason for the injuries, which included locals and travellers as well.
The first responders immediately provided the medical help on the scene. It has been reported that out of five, three victims have endured serious injuries, upon first aid they were immediately moved to the Sint Maarten Medical Centre for the further treatment to start.
The officials stated that the other two sustained minor injuries and did not require hospitalization. The authorities have also advised the people in the region to exercise extreme attentiveness during severe weather conditions.
Moreover, everyone should remain under shelter and avoid staying in open spaces when the lightning activity begins or is continuously ongoing. These precautions can minimize the risk when the activity happens.
The authorities have also urged all the locals and tourists to follow the Sint Maarten Meteorological Department and local news channels for regular weather related updates so as to avoid being in a situation that could cause harm.
The Sint Maarten Police Force stated, “Our thoughts and sympathies are with the injured and their families during this challenging time. We will continue to monitor their conditions and provide the necessary support.”
