New York: A seven-month-old baby girl was fatally shot in the head on Wednesday, April 1, by the two suspects in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Reportedly, the incident has sent shockwaves across New York City and prompted a police investigation.
According to police reports, the baby victim has been identified as seven-month-old baby girl, Kaori Patterson-Moore, who was in a stroller with her mother when the incident occurred. Reportedly, the incident took place at around 1:20 p.m., near the intersection of Humboldt and Moore Streets in East Williamsburg, near the Bushwick border.
Suddenly two armed suspects riding a moped came into the area and opened fire toward a crowd of adults and children who were gathered at a place and after that the suspects fled the scene on the same two wheeler in an unknown direction.
In the chaos people nearby started to escape the scene including the mother with her child, who took shelter in a nearby shop and when she checked her daughter, she realized that her seven-month-old baby girl was shot in the head during the attack. Following which the father of the infant took her to the Woodhull Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:46 p.m., despite the efforts to save her.
After the incident, the local police officers of the area were contacted where on arrival at the scene, they quickly canvassed the area and immediately launched their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The officers also recovered the CCTV footage of the area and nearby locality where they discovered that both the suspects had an accident as they crashed their vehicle into a car.
Responding to which the officers quickly arrested one of the suspects whom they believed to be the shooter who was riding on the back of the moped, and was injured in the crash. The individual is currently in police custody and is being questioned in connection with an unrelated and separate domestic incident.
However, the second suspect is still at large and police are actively trying to locate and arrest him. Police officers further reported that the shooting might be a gang-related activity and the infant was killed unintentionally.
The Mayor of New York city Zohran Mamdani has condemned the act while describing it as a devastating and senseless killing. The Mayor emphasised that following the act, there is an urgent need to confront and combat the gun violence in the country.
Jessica Tisch, the police commissioner of New York City also commented on the killing while confirming that the investigators are actively probing the matter and gathering evidence including a video which shows the moment shots were fired toward a group that included adults and children. Also the abandoned moped used in the attack has since been recovered and is being examined for evidence.
