Mrs. Edrice Lewis-Viechweg, known as the woman behind the St. Kitts and Nevis national flag design, gets a lot of appreciation on social media when she conveys the real meaning of all the colors of the flag.
St. Kitts and Nevis gained independence from British colonial rule on 19 September 1983. This year, Independence Day of St. Kitts and Nevis will mark 41 years of independence. Every year, this day is celebrated with enthusiasm and a vibe of great excitement.
Edrice Lewis-Viechweg made an immense contribution to adjusting the colors of the flag correctly. Through a Facebook post, Mrs Edrice was appreciated and regarded as Independence Day approached. It also conveyed the meaning of each color of the flag. Such as:
- Green represents our fertile lands.
- Red represents our struggle from slavery through colonialism to independence.
- Yellow represents our year-round sunshine.
- Black represents our African Heritage.
- The white stars are symbols of hope and liberty.
Edrice Lewis is from Newtown, Basseterre, St. Kitts. Currently, she lives in the Connecticut region of the USA. Apart from contributing to the design of the St. Kitts and Nevis flag, Mrs Edrice has also contributed to various aspects and fields of the country.
In 2024, Companion of the Star of Merit Recipients Honored for Meritorious Service to the Nation, Mrs Edrice was honored for her immense contribution to the nation. She was recognized for her outstanding work in the field of education and also for her significant role as the designer of the St. Kitts and Nevis flag.
She has lived a life of honor, service, and devout patriotism. Long back in 2017, Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris appreciated her foundation and scholarship program in which hundreds of local primary school children are provided with school supplies.
PM Harris commended her commitment to nation-building and discussed ways in which her scholarship program could be enhanced. Apart from that, she has also conveyed the reason behind her flag design.
The flag has a green triangle for the fertility of the islands and a red triangle for the years of struggle against slavery and colonialism. The center is a black stripe reflecting the African Heritage of the people. All the narrow yellow borders around the stripe refer to the brilliant sunshine of the islands. The stripe has two white stars, one for each island, as symbols of hope and liberty.
The government has once again honored Edrice Lewis-Viechweg and given her the title of “Brainchild behind St. Kitts and Nevis flag.”
