St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Terrance Drew recently addressed the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He emphasized the need for sustainable peace zones, international support for Haiti, and global inclusion, which were in line with the Assembly’s theme of “leaving no one behind.”
At the beginning of the session, PM Drew paid tribute to various officials for their support and specifically thanked Dennis Francis for their leadership in the previous session of UNGA. He reminded the members of UNGA about their theme, ‘ Unity and Diversity,’ which is important to keep all nations under one roof.
While presenting the important lecture, PM Drew talked about the Caribbean’s commitment to maintaining a zone of peace, referencing the Argyle Declaration, a model for managing security challenges in the region.
The entire session focused on various important issues that the entire world is facing. Specifically, the recent war zones of Israel and Hamas are what needed much focus and support.
Prime Minister Drew also referred to prioritizing every nation by saying, “We stand at a crossroads. We can no longer afford the luxury of inaction. We must meet the moment with the courage it demands. We must reject business as usual and embrace a new path forward—one that values people over profit, one that prioritizes the planet over power”.
He dedicated an important portion of his speech to the hurricane issues that are faced by the people of Grenada, St. Vincents, Grenadines, and other regions as well.
While addressing Haiti, the PM drew calls for support and peace in the country. He expressed his grief for ongoing wars and issues in Palestine, Haiti, Congo, and the Israeli-Hamas conflict. He conveyed the cries of mothers, the separation of children, the wastage of food, and the improper supply of medical help during his speech.
He said, “The only pathway to peace and to secure fundamental human rights and dignity is through the two-state solution,” he said, underscoring the Caribbean Community’s unwavering commitment to peace and security.”
PM Drew asked for the establishment of a Multinational Security Support Mission by the Caribbean Community that represents a commitment to restoring security, sustainability, and hope for Haiti’s future. “Haiti was there for the downtrodden of the world, lighting the path toward freedom for many, and now the world must be there for Haiti,” PM Drew remarked.
PM Drew advocated for Taiwan’s inclusion in international organizations. He highlighted Cuba’s contributions in the fields of medicine and education and emphasized the importance of recognizing Taiwan’s role in sustainable development and innovation.
Prime Minister Dr. Drew’s address highlighted various important issues such as global peace, security, and sustainable development, reinforcing St. Kitts and Nevis’ role as a voice for the vulnerable and an advocate for inclusive global cooperation.
