St Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew visited Bayford’s Farm in St Peter’s and take the tour of the products that has been grown in the farm. He was accompanied by the Minister of Agriculture- Samal Duggins and another delegation from Southern University to visit the facility.
He expressed pleasure in seeing the growth at the farm and added that the place means a lot to the people of St. Peter’s. The visit also featured the Ministry of Agriculture, the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and a delegation from Southern University.
Prime Minister Drew also recalled his childhood memories and said that he spent a lot of happy childhood days at Bayford’s as he is from St Peter’s. He added,” It is a place that means a lot to the people of St. Peter’s, and it was my commitment to revive it. I am pleased to say that we are well on our way.”
He also lauded the farm and said that the agriculture is the significant aspect of the economy of St Kitts and Nevis. With the locally grown products, the country can pave the path of becoming self-reliant and reduce the food import.
Notably, St Kitts and Nevis is on the way of reducing the food import by 25% by 2025 with locally grown products. Several initiatives have been taking place to empower backyard farmers and enhance food security.
With the programs such as Sustainable Agriculture for Everyone Program (SAFE), the government aimed to foster a culture of sustainable agriculture and self-reliance. The initiative 25 by 25 has been assisting the country to diversify the economy and create a prosperous future for the local community.
The local farmers will get enhanced business and market on their naturally grown products and make people eat the products that are grown in St Kitts and Nevis. The agriculture sector and green initiatives have been prioritized as the country is on the path of becoming first sustainable island state.
