Climate Smart Hospital agreement was signed between the Government of St.Kitts and Nevis and the Republic of China.
Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Terrace Drew gave an update on Climate Smart Hospital which will be built in the Camps area in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. In May 2024, a public signing ceremony was held by the Federal Government for the hospital project. The agreement was made between the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Republic of China.
The Prime Minister uncovered the property while touring the project. He said that the construction will start soon. He also said that the hospital will play an important role in improving the health sector. The building will be constructed in such a way that it will tolerate natural calamities. The hospital will provide improved health service that will benefit citizens of St.Kitts and Nevis.
The hospital will provide sustainable facilities that will take the country one step closer towards its goal. While touring the PM said the country must have a hospital that can tolerate excess climate change and hurricanes.
“The reason why we have chosen this as our first major project is because we know that with the burden of climate change and stronger hurricanes, we must have a hospital that can withstand that,” Terrance Drew said.
By keeping an eye on unpredicted hurricanes, the Prime Minister said, people must get every possible health care if any hurricane hits. The island of Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines have suffered a lot during Hurricane Beryl. The citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis should not face the same.
He again added, “We cannot afford to have that happen here in St. Kitts and Nevis. So if a hurricane hits we have to make sure that if there is one infrastructure that should be standing, it should be the hospital and that is why we have made this a major project.”
Natta-Nelson, the Ambassador, highlighted that as the lands are cleared, the soil analysis will be done by the architect. The reason for soil analysis is to ensure the land is suitable to hold the hospital in harsh climatic conditions. In several islands, the collapse of buildings, and hospitals were recorded in hurricanes. St.Kitts and Nevis prepares the island to face the hurricane in an advanced manner.
The Republic of China is providing financial support to this project. Following the agreement sign, the prime Minister, Terrance Drew, expressed his gratitude for providing assistance for the hospital project.
