Caribbean: Jayhan Odlum Smith from Saint Lucia secured second position in the opening round of the Men’s 100m Freestyle at Paris Olympics 2024 on Monday.
His finished his swimming in 50.39 which is also considered as a new national record. However, he placed 44th in overall result out of 78 swimmers in the game.
With the event, he lost his chance to win the medal as he was unable to advance to the semi-finals of the game. He recorded his personal best with the timing and received accolades for his performance.
The only Caribbean swimmer who was able to advance to the semi-finals of the 100m freestyle in Paris Olympics 2024 was Jordan Crooks of the Cayman Islands. He swam the 7th fastest time in the heats. The swimmers from other countries included Mikel Schreuders (26th), Lamar Taylor (also 26th) of the Bahamas or Dylan Carter (34th) of Trinidad and Tobago failed to advance to the semis.
With the event, Jayhan was able to retain his title as the fastest 100m swimmer in the Eastern Caribbean.
Notably, Paris Olympics was kickstarted on Friday and will run through August 11, 2024. Saint Lucia has been represented by the five member delegates who will compete in different games.
The first athlete named Commonwealth Champion Julien Alfred will compete in 100m and 200m sprinting. The second athlete is Jayhan Odlum Smith who competed in 100m freestyle and finished his Olympics journey.
The third athlete in the list is Luc Chevrier who will represent Saint Lucia in ILCA 7 Dinghy Class. The fourth one is Michael Joseph who will compete in 400m.
Julien will be competing in the women’s 100m and 200m with her first round of competition on August 2nd.
Michael will be contesting the men’s 400m with his first round on August 4th.
The athletics will commence on August 1, 2024 in which hundreds will participate from across the globe. The Olympics are underway at Paris and so far, the Japan ranked on the top in the medal tally with six gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals.
