Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA) has approved the operation of various commercial airlines to New Barbuda International Airport, in which the LIAT ranks first along with other airlines. LIAT has recently made its presence at the New Barbuda International Airport, which has officially replaced the old Codrington Airport.
New Barbuda International Airport is named as the Burton-Nibbs International Airport. Both Burton and Nibbs were important citizens in Antigua & Barbuda’s political history. The project has involved some great upgrades, including the construction of a 7,100-foot runway. With LIAT and various other commercial flights, this Airport will begin its operation sooner.
LIAT Airlines will officially operate as the Commercial flight LIAT 2020 to and from the Burton-Nibbs International Airport. LIAT has played an important role in Caribbean Aviation. It was founded in 1956 and has been established as a small operation using Piper Apache. LIAT has its services across 15 destination islands in the Caribbean.
Though LIAT has faced numerous problems in the past in terms of finances and even due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, it is now restored as LIAT 2020 as a new entity. It was launched as a joint venture between the governments of Antigua and Barbuda and the Nigerian carrier Air Peace. This latest iteration aims to restore inter-island connectivity with plans for future expansion, operating flights to destinations like Saint Lucia and Barbados.
The headquarters of LIAT is in Antigua, Barbuda’s first largest international Airport, VC Bird. The airline was primarily owned by Caribbean governments and had great shares held by Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Though LIAT is older than many Caribbean airlines, it still maintains its great service and function.
