Roseau, Dominica: Jasmine Schofield from Dominica won three medals including two silver and one bronze at the recently PanAm Age Group Swimming Championships in Puerto Rico. The tournament was held from August 22 to 25, 2024 and she also secured a national record.
Firstly, she won silver medal in the women’s 100 freestyle and represented Dominica at the stage. Schofield secured another silver in the 50m butterfly at the Aquatics championship.
Jasmine Schofield also won a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle and set a new personal best and new national record of 29.67 in the event at the stage.
She is known as one of the best swimmers of Dominica and participated at the recently concluded 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games. She was the first female swimmer to represent Dominica in the Olympics since 2000, when her mother Francilia Agar participated in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
In the event, she secured her personal best and swam for 29.91 seconds in the women’s 50m freestyle. She finished in the 3rd place in her meet at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and garnered the applaud from Dominica.
Now, Schofield has been preparing for the upcoming World Aquatics Scholarship and will move to France to get training for a year.
The government of Dominica recently honoured the Paris Olympians after Gold Medalist Thea Lafond returned to her home soil on Sunday. Her achievement was celebrated at the Douglas Charles Airport and the events were held to extend gratitude to Lafond which included Motorcade Rally and other celebration concert.
She was honoured with $400,000 and the government announced that the national award will be given to her. Besides this, a sport facility will be provided to the Dominicans which will be named as Thea Lafond Track and Field Complex.
Further, other athletes including Jasmine Schofield received the cheques of $20,000 for representing Dominica at the global stage and securing the national records.
