India’s PM Narendra Modi arrived in Georgetown, Guyana for his 2 day visit and was warmly welcomed at the Georgetown airport by the President of Guyana Mohamed Irfaan Ali, PM Dickon Mitchell of Grenada, PM Mia Amor Mottley of Barbados and many other cabinet Ministers.
PM Narendra Modi and President Irfaan Ali greeted each other with a hug and exchanged salutations.
It is to be noted that the PM of India has reached Guyana to address a special sitting of Guyana’s parliament while joining other leaders from partner Caribbean countries for 2nd India – CARICOM Summit.
The Ministry of External Affairs of India stated that this visit by Indian PM Modi was at the invitation of Guyanese President Irfaan Ali. Furthermore, Narendra Modi is the first Indian PM to visit Guyana in 56 years.
Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar stated, “Recently, there has been an uptick in high-level contacts between India and Guyana. President Irfaan Ali himself was a chief guest at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in January 2023″.
He further added, “We have had a longstanding developmental partnership with Guyana, and this is in the fields of health, connectivity, and renewable power”.
He also said that they hope to partner with them in various fields, including in hydrocarbons, healthcare, education and defence. The MEA official additionally said that Guyana is the fastest-growing economy in the world.
MEA’s official Facebook page post mentioned that PM Modi was handed the ‘key to the city of Georgetown’ by Mayor of Georgetown, as a testament of close ties between India and Guyana.
This 2 day visit will end on November 21. Narendra Modi on his official Facebook page welcomed the Indian Community in Guyana for their warm welcome. He stated in his post, “They have shown that distance is never a barrier to staying connected to one’s roots. Glad to see the community making a mark here across different sector.”
