The star player of Grenada receives the precious title of ‘FIDE Master,’ the third highest rank in the Chess Olympiad. He made history by being the youngest player in Grenada to get a much-deserved title in the chess game. From now on, Renniel Gilbert will be referred to as the ‘FIDE Master’ in the chess circles.
FIDE Master is one of the four titles that is given to Chess Players by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). The other three titles consist of International Master, Grandmaster, and Candidate Master.
FIDE, the world’s governing body for Chess, published the names of 23 players who were accorded the title ‘FIDE Master.’ Renniel Gilbert stood first in the list and was given the title. His significant contribution to the world of Chess has given him recognition in the field. Out of the ten matches he played in the Olympiad, he won seven games; one was drawn, and two were lost, earning him 7.5 points.
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) uses a rating system to determine the strength of a player and to judge him by his performance against other players. To carry the titles of FIDE Master, International Master, and Grandmaster, one must have a minimum rating of 2300, 2400, and 2500 respectively. A Candidate Master carries a minimum rating of 2200.
The 17-year-old Gilbert has truly made his mark in the Olympiad. His performance qualified him to skip the rank of Candidate Master.
The Prime Minister of Grenada took to their official Facebook handle, where they appreciated the performance of the young boy. He congratulated the entire Grenada team for performing well in the game.
Netizens congratulated the young FIDE Master and also appreciated Grenada’s men’s and women’s teams for their excellent performance.
The current ten members of the Grenada team in Budapest are the first ever to participate in an Olympiad. Almost 2,000 players from 197 countries have participated in the Budapest Chess Olympiad. All the players played well, and this event was the most successful event in the history of the Chess Olympiad.
Budapest conducted the Chess Olympiad after 98 years. Earlier, an unofficial Chess Olympiad was conducted in 1926 in Budapest. This year, 193 teams participated in the Open Category, whereas 181 teams were in the women’s category.
The Olympiad started on 10 September 2024 with a blast and will officially close with a closing ceremony on 23 September 2024.
