Grenada made up its mark by securing its first point in the 45th Chess Budapest Olympiad, which is being held in Budapest. Renniel Gilbert, the top player of Grenada, took the victory to his name by defeating a well-known player and FIDE Chess Master from Cameroon. His focus and much practice in the game brought him to the ladder of victory.
A total of four-person teams were from both sides, Grenada and Cameroon, and there was tough competition amongst all. Despite a solid game by Grenada, Cameroon took the lead by defeating three Grenada players in the chess match. But, with the passionate and exemplary skills of Renniel Gilbert, he was successful in getting the first point in the match.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports of Grenada has taken to their official Facebook page, where they have congratulated the bright performance of the young player. After the victory of Renniel Gilbert, he is now the current National Chess Champion after he emerged as the top player in the first-ever National Chess Tournament in May 2024.
All the players of Grenada from both the men’s and women’s teams in the 45th Chess Olympiad have showcased outstanding performance throughout their games. But Namibia managed to fight back well with the score of 4 to 0 against the Grenada Women’s Team. At the same time, Cameroon faced tough competition but got a 3 to 1 against the Grenada Men’s Team.
The Office of the Prime Minister of Grenada also appreciated the efforts of all the players who went up to perform in the Budapest Chess Olympiad. He personally congratulated Renniel Gilbert for winning and supported him in keeping up his form throughout the upcoming matches.
The Budapest 45th Chess Olympiad will remain a significant event in the history of all chess olympiads. The Budapest Olympiad will continue to conduct matches till September 23, 2024. This time, a massive gathering of a total of 193 teams took place in the Budapest event in the open category, whereas 181 were in the women’s category.
The host country, Budapest, has had the chance to conduct this event after 98 years. Budapest was the host in 1926 when an unofficial chess olympiad took place. This event is also of special importance as it shows the changing game of chess in the 100-year history of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
