The government announced a property tax exemption for 2025 on all properties that were damaged by the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
The Ministry of Finance, Inland Revenue Division (IRD), has recently offered some welcome relief to property owners affected by Hurricane Beryl. The government has announced a 2025 property tax exemption for all properties that were damaged during the storm. This relief is only applicable in Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
The exemption will be not automatic for property owners on mainland Grenada. This is a great step taken by the government to help the residents of the island. Grenada property owners have to request to take advantage of this relief by filling out the Hurricane Beryl property damage assessment form.
The forms should be submitted as soon as possible so that it can ensure the exemption is applied to their 2025 Property Tax Assessment.
The government proposed this relief under the second phase of the Post Hurricane Beryl Incentives Package. Under this project, the government is also helping the residents of the nation to rise again.
The assessment can easily be found on the official website ird. gd or Inland Revenue Division’s main office, Young Street, St. George’s. If these channels are not accessible by residents, they can visit any District Revenue Office and collect the form. If the residents have any issues or to know more about this they can contact at the telephone number (473) 440-3556 or via email at valuationofficer@ird.gov.gd.
The Grenada government also opened up about VAT exemption on local purchases for important infrastructure categories to facilitate recovery and reconstruction.
The categories cover various items, including building materials like cement, steel, lumber, blocks, galvanized sheeting, screws, doors, windows, tiles and more.
Household furnishings like cabinets, countertops, furniture, and large household appliances. The other important equipment and replacement parts to be recognized under this act include generators, air conditioners, and other replacement parts.
A Beryl Economic Support Secretariat (BESS) will be established both on Carriacou and on mainland Grenada to, inter alia, receive applications from individuals and businesses to avail of this incentive program.
VAT waiver will help property owners and businesses that have suffered damage caused by Hurricane Beryl. This exemption will make it more cost-effective by lowering the cost of essential construction materials and equipment.
The government also pointed out some limitations to this measure such as property owners should have been in some way impacted by Hurricane Beryl.
In particular, the government will only provide a single piece of refrigerator, stove, washer, and television that the household can enjoy. The items that the government had provided should not be put up for resale.
