Grenada: As the Spicemas is approaching in Grenada the Veterinary and Livestock Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, Forestry and Marine Resources have warned the performers to not used animals while performing during the island’s annual Carnival Celebrations.
The warning shares that the use of snakes, chickens and dogs should not be made while performing as such acts are considered offensive in local, regional, and international veterinary communities.
The Division also stated that all police officers have the power to arrest someone straightaway without a warrant if they believe that someone has committed a serious offense under the Cruelty to Animals Act. This will not just lead to not just fine but jail time.
Moreover, it has been informed that the officer will make this decision on the basis of his own observation or the received complaint, or any information related to the act that is provided by someone, but in that scenario, the person should provide the name and address to the officer.
Additionally, any person is caught breaking the Cruelty to Animal Act, the officer will directly arrest them and take charge of the vehicle and the animal immediately. Till the time the legal proceedings will be conducted the seized vehicle or animal will be kept in safe place. It will be returned when the case is over or the court decides to return it back to the person that has been charged of the offence or the actual owner.
It is to be noted that if any animal is held by the police for violating the Cruelty to Animals Act, the costs for taking care of the animal, keeping and necessary veterinary care will be charged from the owner of the animal if he is convicted. The cost will be collected as a civil debt if the owner is convicted as part of the legal costs associated with the case.
