The Ministry of Education of Grenada have announced to close the schools due to bad weather conditions. This decision has been taken after consulting with the National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA), keeping in mind the safety of the students of island nation.

As per the details shared by NaDMA, the roads have become dangerous to commute and blocked due to continuous rainfall and extreme winds along with landslides making it impossible for students to reach their schools.

Further, the Ministry of Education of Grenada (MEG) on their official Facebook page posted that after consulting  NADMA at 4 am, they have reached the decision to keep the schools closed for the safety of the children.

The Met Department shared, “Scattered moderate convection associated with a low-level trough in the vicinity of the Windward Islands is producing moderate showers, some heavy, and isolated thunderstorms that affected Grenada throughout the night.”

The post by MEG further advised parents and legal guardians to ensure that children do not roam outside due to the unsafe conditions without them or in their absence.

The MEG also apologised for any difficulty caused due to the short notice and said that they hope that the citizens will understand the need of this urgent action as an immediate safety precaution.

Additionally, the NaDMA stated that a flood and landslide warning was issued for Grenada due to depression in and near the Windward Islands.

The NaDMA on its official Instagram page mentioned that moisture and instability due to surface trough will continue to affect the state.

Furthermore, it is predicted that any additional rainfall in coming days will increase chances of more landslides and floods.

Dr. Terence Walters, National Disaster Coordinator of NaDMA stated, “ If conditions persist, more flooding and landslides are expected”.

The Government of Grenada also asked the citizens to keep traffic at a low so that the emergency workers can continue their work to keep citizens safe.

The citizens are continuously advised to follow safety measures and to pay attention to further updates issued by the Meteorological Office and NaDMA.
