St Kitts and Nevis: Jaylen Bennett from St Kitts and Nevis qualified for the U20 World Junior Championship which is scheduled to be held from August 26 to 31, 2024 at Peru.
He secured the place in the championship by winning 2024 UAGTCA’s Ron Jackson Youth Invitational as he finished the Boys 400m in 47.43 times. Bennet will join T’anna Liburd in the squad for the U20 World Junior Championship as she qualified earlier this year in 200m and 400m.
Jaylen David Bennett is a Kittitian-American, multi-sport athlete and has gained well-deserved appraisal in travel and field. He is a member of the Phillips Exeter Academy and has participated in several athletic games.
He has also qualified for the U17 Boys 400m, U17 Boys 200 category of the 2023 CARIFTA Games in 2023. Bennet also competed in the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic, indoor track meet on January 20, 2023.
In the athletic meet, he finished his running in 48.62 seconds in the 400m dash and become the first athlete to score fastest 10th grade time in high school and 16th overall in the United States. Besides this, he also finished his running in 22.05 second in200m dash, scoring new record and becoming second fastest 200m time for 10th grade in the United States.
The personal best time for Bennett has remained 7.12 seconds in 60m dash which has been followed by a 400m led on the distance medley relay.
Last year, Jaylen Bennett won the silver medal for St Kitts and Nevis in the CARIFA Games in the U17 400m. This year, he qualified for the finals of the 400m in the U19 in CARIFTA Games which were held in Grenada in March.
Notably, Mertizer Williams became the first athlete from St Kitts and Nevis to win medal in the U20 World Junior Championship. She captured the silver medal in 200m in 2008 in Poland and scripted history in the athletic category of the country.
Now, the qualifying process in underway in St Kitts and Nevis as two athletes have been selected for the championship.
