Dominica to honor Thea Lafond and 17 others with prestigious awards on November 3

Dominica: To commemorate the 46th anniversary of Independence, the government on November 3 will honour eighteen individuals with awards.

During the ceremony, Olympic Gold Medallist Thea Lafond-Gadson will be honoured with Dominica’s highest award, the Dominica Award of Honour. She will be awarded for her exceptional performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

It is to be noted that Thea Lafond-Gadson with her hard work and dedication in the women’s triple jump brought Dominica its first ever Olympic Medal and that too Gold.

Moreover, after winning when she came back to Dominica, the Olympian was welcomed in a grand manner, the streets were filled with the citizens to celebrate her achievements.  During the several ceremonies held to honour her, the Prime Minister of Dominica, Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit, announced a cash gift of $400,000 and her appointment as a National Sports Ambassador and various other rewards.

Additionally, the authorities shared that Dominica’s second highest award of honour, named the Sisserou Award of Honour will be presented to Dentist Dr. Cyril Robinson and representatives from the Government of the United Kingdom, the Government of Canada, and Range Developments.

Furthermore, the award that will be presented is the Meritorious Service Award. This will be awarded to several individuals for their contributions in various fields, which include:

  • Cheryl Rolle for Business and Insurance
  • Simeon Albert for Community Development
  • Nigel Francis for Education and Culture
  • Gerald Corbette for Education
  • Armour Thomas for Community Development
  • Annette Bates for Community Development and Agriculture
  • Martin Charles for Diplomacy and Sports
  • Carol Severin-Abraham for Agriculture
  • Hudson Challenger for Education
  • Catherine Janice Leighton-Armah for Diplomacy

The other titles that will be given are Long Service Medals, these will be handed over to three individuals for their work in their respective fields.

  • Courtney Challenger for Public Service
  • Adelina Destouche for Education
  • Isaac Andre for Sports

It has been reported that President of Dominica, Sylvanie Burton will confer the awards on Sunday, November 3, 2024 at the official ceremony of Independence Day which will be held at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium in Roseau.

The award-presenting ceremony will begin at 5:00 pm.
