Roseau, Dominica: The Housing Recovery Project is all set to expanded in Dominica, featuring the construction of 35 homes. The expansion will facilitate the relocation of families in Castle Bruce who were affected by passage of the November 6th trough in 2022.
The expansion will be held through a collaboration between Ministry of Housing of Dominica and the World Bank. The Housing Recovery Project is a government-led initiative, aiming at helping people rebuild their homes which were lost during Hurricane Maria.
The project is also working on the goal of building 420 homes. At these dates, Dominica has approximately over 320 constructions stats under the housing recovery project and the coming year, the goal of 420 homes is likely to be completed.
The 420 homes will involve a number of processes including the bidding process and the procurement process. The east region relocation initiative is now a priority component of the project, including the vulnerable households that were affected from the November 2022 trough.
Under the housing recovery project, the government of Dominica engaged with quite a few local contractors. The project is homeowner driven which means that the homeowners are very much integrated into the planning and management and construction aspects of the home.
Meanwhile, a site has also been designed for the new additions and cabinet appointed local committee which will serve as Gatekeeper for the project. The people in the Committee will serve as a laser between the public sector agencies.
The site design is currently under review by the physical planning division. The Planning of the new additional homes is at an advanced stage with construction set to begin by October this year.
Dr Kyra Paul- Permanent Secretary of the Housing Ministry said that despite the challenges faced, the project continues to be a success. “One of the successful things of the project is that is has helped to facilitate at least 147 family members with getting there regularize in terms of their land ownership, one of the criteria for benefiting under the housing recovery project.”
