St. John’s: The much talked about Booby Alley Housing Project in St. John’s City West, which is aimed at providing modern housing facilities to families from lower-income groups, has gained traction as the government is rushing to complete the condominium.
The complex will have 150 units that will be handed over to families which are unable to afford construction of houses.
The project has been funded by the Republic of China and will benefit the families who, to date, have been living in impoverished areas of the nation.
The units that are being constructed have been designed to withstand the vagaries of nature, including hurricanes and storms, besides resisting earthquakes.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has called this housing project one of the most significant developments aimed at providing affordable housing for downtrodden families.
A sum of EC$100 million is being spent on the construction of these housing units which will have all the modern facilities and provide a comfortable living space for the families.
The construction at the site commenced in October 2024 and the project is likely to be completed within 18 months.
The groundbreaking ceremony of this project was attended by various government officials and stakeholders.
The Prime Minister stated that while the government was working to provide the physical structure, those who will be coming to live in these units must develop respect for others and work collectively to keep the space clean and livable.
Talking about the project, Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph said that this was a first-of-its-kind housing project which was being undertaken by the government of Antigua and Barbuda, which will improve the living conditions of people hailing from a not so well to do section of the society.
