St Vincent: The residents in Southern Grenadines have been struggling due the lack of the accommodation as their homes were destroyed by Hurricane Beryl. In order to mitigate the issue, the government of St Vincent and the Grenadines has been looking for the rental accommodation for these residents.
The private homeowners or rental properties with available spaces have been asked to contact the Ministry of Tourism amid the urgent need. The duration for renting the space has been set from September 2024 to May 2025.
The ministry also outlined the requirements and added that the spaces should be safe, clean and livable so that these homes could ensure the well-being of the displaced family members. The rental homes should include bedrooms, bathroom and kitchen area.
The damage in the Caribbean due to the Beryl was assessed by IOM UN Migration Situation Report which outlined that 98% of private homes and dwellings were severely damaged on the Union Island.
On the other hand, 90% of private homes and dwellings have faced heavy damage due to Hurricane Beryl in Canouan.
St Vincent and the Grenadines was hard hit by Beryl, causing damage to the livelihoods and lives. Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves added that the government is working to solve the issue of electricity by the end of August on Canouan Island.
However, the issue of the reliability of the buildings has also been raised as PM Gonsalves added that they are not sure whether these buildings are fit for the electricity or not.
The education sector has also been facing the issue as it was outlined that the government is concerned about the primary and secondary education on Union Island from September 2 when the new term will commence.
As per the authorities, the consultations will be hosted to address the issue of the people affected by the Hurricane Beryl including government’s response to the disaster, relief, recovery, reconstruction and the scheduled reopening of schools in September.
Now, the issue of the homes has been focused by the government to provide accommodation to the parents and students who lost their homes in Hurricane Beryl.
