Roseau, Dominica: Annette Sanford has been declared as the first female Kalinago Chief in Dominica on Tuesday. The election for the position took place on Monday in which seven candidates filled their nominations.
Sanford topped the polls with a total of 693 votes, securing her position as the 18th Chief recorded since the 1800s. She became the first female Chief in the history of Kalinago.
As per the vote count, Veronica Ideline Burton who belongs to Bataca received 32 votes, Kenrick Dana Auguiste from St Cry got 19 votes, Wilbert Devon Cuffy fought the election through Teacup symbol won three votes.
On the other hand, Casius Darroux from St Cyre received 162 votes, Jumadine Faustines- Frederick from Mahuat River received six votes. The last candidate Natasha Zandra Green from Salybia received 272 votes.
Throughout her campaign, Sanford proposed a four-pillar five-year plan which would be implemented upon her election into office as Chief. The four pillars include making the best use of the Natural Resources, perpetuating the unique indigenous culture of the Kalinago, implementing social welfare and protection activities and branding and marketing of the community.
She added that her vision is to grow and support a sustainable economy while respecting the unique indigenous culture and traditions. After the elections, she gave a call for unity and said that there is a need to work together.
Sanford added, ”Let us join hands and our hearts and put the Kalinago Territory first. We need to set aside our political differences and focus on developing our community.” She also pledged to support the people and assist them in accomplishing their goals.
She also promised to work hard and fulfill her promises to thrive the Kalinago Community.
Notably, Annette Sanford was a nurse by profession and in her victory speech, she expressed that she will work for the betterment of the Kalinago community. The supporters of the Sanford also organized the motorcade rally in the community.
