Trinidad: A bizarre incident shocked both the public and authorities as a police officer suspected the theft of his own vehicle right outside the Chaguanas Police Station. Crime-watchers are labeling it as an unusual act.
According to the authorities, the incident took place in the early hours of August 13, 2025, when a 36-year-old officer from the Central Division Gang and Intelligence Unit parked his car at the Railway road car park near the station. His car was a sleek black Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross which held a value of $299,000, the car had the registration plate number PEE 7508.
According to his initial report, the car was securely locked, but when he returned to take his car at around 1:30 pm, the vehicle was nowhere to be found.
After his initial report the police officials on the very next day the SUV was discovered in Longdenville with some of its parts stripped. The officials identified the 4 suspects that were involved in the theft and were taken into custody where they admitted their crime.
As the officials made the arrest a twist emerged when the suspects told the authorities the officer himself staged the theft. The theft was staged by the officer to disguise his financial difficulties, as the sources indicated that he had taken out a bank loan for the car which he was struggling to repay. The authorities are also focusing on the officer itself.
One of the senior officers spoke up on the matter on the basis of anonymity that law enforcement sources describe the case as “unprecedented,” also highlighting the challenge that they have to face while investigating one of their own officers while maintaining public trust. He gave the statement, “It’s deeply concerning when an officer, tasked with upholding the law, might manipulate circumstances for personal gain.”
The officer may have to face detention as the investigations are continuing, regarding the recruitment of the suspects and more.
