The Government of Grenada announced a grant of $11 million dollars for hurricane-affected region. It also announced the large-scale repair of the housing society in Grenada. The approval for Mon Rush housing scheme has been given to provide benefits to people, ensuring the safety and protection of victims of hurricane. Volunteers from neighboring regions were also gathered to help the affected individuals.
The Government of Grenada declared minor decline in fuel prices that includes, Cylinder, Gasoline, Diesel, Kerosene and Bulk LPG. Monthly adjustments in the retail prices of petroleum products are made effective from the 18th of September.
On 1st July, the island was hit by Hurricane Beryl. North east region of Granada was the most affected among other regions of the island. Agriculture, infrastructure, housing were destroyed by the natural disaster. About 95% of the buildings were collapsed on ground. The local farmers were adversely affected as they lost their home as well as cultivated products. It was recorded as the type-4 hurricane, which is considered the most powerful.
A 50-year-old volunteer named Ryan Jackson has Grenadian heritage but lives in London. He remarked, “Because Carriacou has a very long aging population, they cannot clear up their houses themselves. So we have teams of guys from Carriacou which are moving everything and getting ready for the new roof and materials.” Ryan Jackson came to assist his older parents along with other people who survived the hurricane.
According to the satellite imagery, a total of 857 houses and buildings were detected to be damaged. Member of Parliament and Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Ron Redhead announced the Mon Rush housing scheme. Under this scheme, the buildings and the houses destroyed by the hurricane will be repaired and made livable for the residents.
The minister, on his social media, mentioned, “I am happy to announce that large-scale repairs of the Mon Rush Housing Scheme’s multiple units have commenced by the Housing Authority of Grenada, and more engagements will be forthcoming in the future.”
The government of Guyana extended its help to Grenada by sending the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) to aid in reconstructing the passage destroyed due to devastation. Following this, the Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell, expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the Guyana government, saying, “I want to thank the President, the Government, and the People of Guyana first and foremost for the unwavering support and solidarity shown to the People of Grenada.”
