After the life-threatening Category 4 Hurricane Beryl made landfall on the islands of Carriacou, Petite Martinique, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines and left the island destructed. The Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Terrance Drew made his first visit to Grenada to assess the devastating damage caused by Hurricane Beryl.
During the damage assessment visit, PM Drew was accompanied by the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit and the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Philip J. Pierre. They together took a damage assessment tour to assess the impact of destruction on the local communities and to provide them with support and help in relief efforts.
Expressing his deep concern for the residents of Grenada and the nearby islands, PM Drew said, that the destruction that has been caused by Hurricane Beryl is a reminder that our regions are extremely vulnerable to natural disasters.
He further expressed his condolences to the ones who lost their loved ones and to those whose homes and livelihoods have been destroyed by Hurricane Beryl. And promised to provide immediate and required support to rebuild and recover the island.
All three Prime Ministers also had a meeting with Dickon Mitchel, Prime Minister of Grenada to have a discussion on the urgent requirements and the ways to deliver them.
It is to be noted that the governments of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, and Saint Lucia have and will provide resources for Grenada’s swift recovery.
Commending the spirit, unity and determination of the people of Grenada PM Drew stated, “Together, we will rebuild stronger and more resilient communities. The Caribbean stands united in support of Grenada during this challenging time.”
During last week, PM Philip J. Pierre of Saint Lucia who is also the present chair of the OECS authority, he has recently provided PM Dickon Mitchell with a helicopter to visit and evaluate the affected areas. It also helped the OECS Pooled Procurement Services transport medical supplies that were urgently needed.
