US Virgin Islands: The residents and travellers in US Virgin Islands have been asked to take care of themselves as the cases of Dengue fever have been increasing significantly in the island nation.
Justa Encarnacion, Health Commissioner, shared that the Epidemiology Division has collected the data till June 24, which reveals that eight dengue cases have been found in St Thomas and one each in St John and St Croix.
Health Commissioner, Encarnacion noted that the health officials in the country are aware that there are more cases than the number reported in the last update by the Epidemiological.
Encarnacion shared that the nation is currently experiencing warmer temperatures along with heavy downpour, the combination creates the ideal conditions for the mosquitos to breed. He further advised to be cautious and take the precautions necessary to prevent the transmission.
He also shared that dengue can quickly spread and can be extremely dangerous.
The Health Department have shared that fever with aches, nausea, pains in various body parts (eyes, typically behind the eyes, muscle, joint, or bone), rashes and vomiting are few common symptoms that one can experience.
The residents have been advised to keep their homes and surroundings clean to reduce the chances of mosquito breeding.
Also, the authorities have urged the residents and visitors to use EPA registered insect repellents with at least one of the following active ingredients in it: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone to keep mosquitoes away.
The Americas region has been witnessing a rapid increase in Dengue virus cases in recent months.
The data reveals that ever since January, the region has recorded over 5.2 Million cases.
