Bogo City, Cebu, Philippines: A 17-year-old girl has been hailed as a hero after she lost her life while trying to save her mother and baby sibling during the powerful 6.9 magnitude earthquake in Bogo City, Cebu. The earthquake struck on Tuesday, causing widespread destruction and claiming 73 lives.
Fe Marie Dumaboc for GMA Regional TV’s Saksi reported that on Wednesday, a total of 11 people who succumbed to their injuries during the earthquake on Tuesday night, are now buried in a vacant lot next to the community chapel in Sitio Felomin, Barabgay Binabag.
The reports also claimed that many people got injured or affected by it as a total of 73 people died in the earthquake. The emergency services swiftly responded in the area where they launched their search and rescue operation on Wednesday after the civil defence office stated that all casualties have been accounted for.
The local government also provided coffins to the families of the deceased, as survivors appealed for help to bury their loved ones.
This event caused a lot of disturbance in the area as the victims lived in a community at the base of a mountain, where their homes got buried by huge boulders that came crashing down during the earthquake.
Further the heartbroken families of the deceased are still struggling to cope with the sudden loss of their loved ones.
The residents of the area who witnessed this event stated that a 17-year-old girl died after returning to her home to try and save her mother and infant sibling. Another victim of the incident Jecel Malinao lost her two young sons, who were aged 10 and five, after rocks fell on them during the earthquake.
The mother stated that she tried to save her children but unfortunately she was not able to rescue them.
The locals of Bogo City and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) confirmed that this is the strongest earthquake ever recorded in northern Cebu.
