Basseterre -Tourists aboard the St. Kitts Scenic Railway had a narrow escape on Sunday morning as it the derailed in St. Paul’s due to heavy rain.
While some tourists sustained minor injuries in the incident most of them escaped unhurt.
Soon after the incident, rescue teams were pressed into service and they reached the spot of the incident and initiated steps to safely help the tourists to disembark from the train.
This is not for the first time that the St. Kitts Scenic Railway train has derailed.
In January 2023 several coaches of the train had derailed in the Tabernacle region. This incident had also been caused due to heavy rain.
The St. Kitts Scenic Railway is one of the major tourist attractions on the island of St. Kitts which takes tourists on a 30 mile circle around the island including an 18 mile journey on the narrow gauge train and 12 miles sightseeing on a bus.
The railway came into existence on the island between 1912 and 1926 and was primarily used for the transportation of sugarcane which was grown on the island.
Due to mounting losses, railway carrying sugarcane was discontinued in 2005 and it was converted into a tourist train in partnership with a private company.
